&lt;DIV style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial'; COLOR: #000000; FONT-SIZE: 10pt"&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;China has some advantages for manufacturing that are probably temporary.  Their currency exchange rate and labor wages are both likely to increase in the  coming years. Manufacturing employment is already falling there. &lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;We can get some of those manufacturing jobs back in the US with a change in  national attitude and policies. Americans and our politicians need to be more  welcoming of manufacturing and assembly operations through lower tax and  regulatory burdens. It takes approximately forever to get government approval  for new plants and equipment in the US, whereas product sales cycles are only 6  - 12 months in many industries. We need to make politicians and bureaucrats do  things faster.&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;We also need to stop bashing big business. Small business is fine – I own a  couple myself. But only big business has the capital and resources needed to  resurrect our once great manufacturing industries. Small businesses can then  prosper as suppliers to the big business operations. &lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;That's the way it works. That's the path to employment growth and reducing  the trade deficit. Typically, Tea Partiers are highly critical of both Obama and  Bush.&amp;nbsp; The shift toward Obama may be evidence that the left determined Bill  Clinton and Blue Dog Democrats strayed too far from progressive ideals.&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;I am neither a conservative nor progressive, but I know people on both ends  of the ideological spectrum who are fixed in their ways. Moderates are often  amenable to compromise, but they lack principles. They'll bend to whoever  convinces them their way is best, then they'll bend the other way for the next  election after witnessing how idiotic the last big government policies were.  Repeat ad infinitum.&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/DIV&gt; &lt;DIV&gt;There's no easy solution when people on both left and right assume societal  problems can be solved only by having government force everyone to do things one  way. Imperfections are everywhere. But  capitalism is the system that optimizes aggregate standard of living through  free choice and market accountability. Any deviation from pure free market  enterprise is a drag on productivity and living standards.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Things are  screwed up precisely because government interfered in the natural functioning of  the free market. The Federal Reserve over-stimulated. Freddie and Fannie  influenced the mortgage and housing markets in unnatural ways. Politicians  forced lenders to loan money to people who shouldn't have qualified. Bubble,  bubble. Homebuyers and Wall Street financiers were happy to play along.  &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;It was fun while it lasted, as people were making money, and politicians  were bragging about their programs and regulations. Greenspan was a hero for  supposedly saving the economy. Yeah, right. Capitalists realize the economy  would grow faster and work better through market mechanisms of accountability.  No bailouts, subsidies, regulatory burdens, nor heavy taxation. Let companies  and workers be accountable for their own performance. That's capitalism. Boudreaux's response to a NY Times book review&lt;/a&gt; that I modified to reflect my personal view on progressive elitism and authoritarianism. It differs slightly from the original authored by Mr. Boudreaux, but he articulates it very well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A popular theme among progressives is that they, in contrast to their mindless Cro-Magnon opposites, overflow with ideas. Progressives see their theories and insights as highly intellectual and enlightened.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But these ideas are almost exclusively about how other people should live their lives. These are ideas about how one group of people (the politically successful) should engineer everyone else’s contracts, social relations, diets, habits, and even moral sentiments.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Put differently, modern progressive ideas are about replacing an unimaginably large multitude of diverse and competing ideas – each one individually chosen, practiced, assessed, and modified in light of what F.A. Anarchy requires a belief that people's thinking can be altered. They feel most parenting advice is based more on opinion than data.&amp;#160; The Freakonomics authors looked at statistical correlation, which, as they note, is not the same as causality.&amp;#160; Ketchup is correlated with hamburgers, but ketchup doesn't cause hamburgers.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Factors correlated with academic success:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ul&gt;   &lt;li&gt;Highly educated parents &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;High socioeconomic status of parents &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Mother was age 30 or older when first child born &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Child did not have low birth weight &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Parents speak English at home &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Child was not adopted &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Parents involved in PTA &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Many books at home (But it doesn't matter if the books are ever read.)&lt;/li&gt; &lt;/ul&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Factors uncorrelated with academic success:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ul&gt;   &lt;li&gt;Family is intact &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Parents recently moved to a better neighborhood &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Non-working mother &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Attended Head Start &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Parents take child to museums &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Spanking &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Child watches TV a lot &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;Parents read to child regularly&lt;/li&gt; &lt;/ul&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The authors note as an overgeneralization that it's more what parents ARE, not what they DO, that is correlated with better academic performance.&amp;#160; Smart parents with good jobs who speak English and value education are more likely to raise well-educated children regardless of marital status, neighborhood, whether mom works, how much TV the kids watch, or how much the parents read to kids or take them to museums.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The Freakonomics authors also looked at the effect of charter schools.&amp;#160; They determined that children who apply to a charter school perform better academically, whether they get accepted to the school or not, than children who don't apply to a charter school.&amp;#160; Rooselvelt claim that big government was needed during the Great Depression to save capitalism. That's analogous to the fire department setting your house ablaze, then claiming they saved half of it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The economy of the late 1920s had its share of speculation, market bubbles, and other problems, as economies have had since the dawn of civilization. But let's see what the Hoover and FDR governments did about it:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They started a trade war with Smoot-Hawley (Hoover), raised the lowest income tax rate from 0.5% to 4%, raised the highest income tax rate from 25% to 63% (Hoover) then 79% (FDR), raised the corporate tax from 11% to 15%, added a 27% tax on undistributed profits, raised numerous excise taxes, raised the inheritance/estate tax from 20% to 70%, instituted a new 2% employer/employee payroll tax, and much, much more. The effect of the economy was crushing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Fed manipulated the money, causing deflation, then later imposed increased reserve requirements on banks leading to lower lending. FDR screwed up markets through his disastrous agricultural policies and subsidies, and his government-imposed industry cartels. FDR also gave unions way too much power and forced up wages, making unemployment worse. Other policies forced up prices, which is the opposite of what's needed in a downturn.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And don't forget the mindlessly idiotic pig slaughter, which has parallels to Cash for Clunkers. Destroy things to artificially create demand. Let's pay half of Americans to dig holes with spoons, and the other half to fill in the holes with spoons. Full employment! Zero productivity! Totally progressive!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All those GOVERNMENT actions are big downers for the economy. Thus the government came in to fix a major problem resulting from their idiotic attempts to fix a much smaller problem. Then we're supposed to believe we needed them. Hah! Excerpts and my commentary:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;blockquote&gt;   &lt;p&gt;In 1930-31, during the Hoover administration and in the midst of an economic collapse, there was a very slight increase in tax rates on personal income at both the lowest and highest brackets. The corporate tax rate was also slightly increased to 12% from 11%. But beginning in 1932 the lowest personal income tax rate was raised to 4% from less than one-half of 1% while the highest rate was raised to 63% from 25%. (That's not a misprint!) The corporate rate was raised to 13.75% from 12%. All sorts of Federal excise taxes too numerous to list were raised as well. The highest inheritance tax rate was also raised in 1932 to 45% from 20% and the gift tax was reinstituted with the highest rate set at 33.5%.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;/blockquote&gt;  &lt;p&gt;But FDR did even worse:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;blockquote&gt;   &lt;p&gt;But the tax hikes didn't stop there. In 1934, during the Roosevelt administration, the highest estate tax rate was raised to 60% from 45% and raised again to 70% in 1935. The highest gift tax rate was raised to 45% in 1934 from 33.5% in 1933 and raised again to 52.5% in 1935. The highest corporate tax rate was raised to 15% in 1936 with a surtax on undistributed profits up to 27%. In 1936 the highest personal income tax rate was raised yet again to 79% from 63%—a stifling 216% increase in four years. Finally, in 1937 a 1% employer and a 1% employee tax was placed on all wages up to $3,000.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;/blockquote&gt;  &lt;p&gt;States added to the huge tax increases.&amp;#160; The economic effects had to be crushing.&amp;#160; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;From elsewhere, I looked at the 1929 stock market crash.&amp;#160; The market dropped from 381 (Sept 3) to 198 (Nov 13). The elected Kennedys are takers of my wages. Big time. Teddy is essentially a Euro-style socialist opposed to my freedom.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;What I bothers me about Ted Kennedy et al is the forced altruism inherent in egalitarian ideology. The Kennedy family has established numerous helpful private sector charities, and I've contributed to several of those myself. Good job! &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;But the progress of civilization is measured in freedom and individual rights, not entitlements and income redistribution. The ideological right tends to force morality on people, while the secular left tends to force their own &amp;quot;religion&amp;quot; of egalitarianism through government confiscation of the fruits of people's labor. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;As none of that social engineering force is authorized by the US Constitution, it's a form of theft and oppression. So left wing forced egalitarianism is no better than right wing quasi-theocratic authoritarianism. In both cases, Americans lose their liberties. Sgt. Crowley did not take kindly to that.&amp;#160; The black officer accompanying Crowley agreed with the arrest. It could have been handled quietly until Obama and Gates imagined a racist angle, which made the whole thing spiral out of control. This was an ordinary police response to a reported break-in until Gates, then Obama, imagined a racist angle. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;There are some calling President Obama and Professor Gates “racists” for jumping to conclusions against a white cop.&amp;#160; I think &amp;quot;&lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racialism"&gt;racialist&lt;/a&gt;&amp;quot; is a better way to describe their controversial attitude.&amp;#160; They have a tendency to frame many issues in terms of race, but they're not necessarily racial bigots.&amp;#160; They just imagine racism where there is none. Racism in America won’t end until racialists of all skin tones let it end.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;As we now know, Sgt. Crowley is an expert police trainer in racial profiling. This is only a case of racism in the imaginations of Gates and Obama, and their inappropriate behavior can only delay our path to a post-racial society. Fortunately, Obama now recognizes his huge blunder and is taking an apologetic approach. What beer did they choose?&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;President Obama seems to forget that he is now president, not a private citizen, but that's a competence issue, not a racial one. Obama wasn't ready for the presidency. He had rather meager political experience, almost no practical professional background, and zero executive experience coming into the job. Unfortunately, the media and political powers ordained him as “The One,” and so now he is. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;President Obama has been stumbling since even before the inauguration. Here's what Big Brother requires me to file: annual IRS, CA, and MA personal and business income tax returns (total of 60-90 pages); annual corporate reports; annual renewal applications for common victualler, tobacco, lottery, liquor licenses; semi-annual business fixtures excise tax; quarterly IRS, CA, and MA estimated tax payments; quarterly US and MA wage reports and unemployment reports; monthly withholding (both US and MA), sales tax, tobacco tax.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are 3 business entities, so some of the above must be filed multiple times.  Then, my tax return is so complicated, the IRS conducts mail audits at least once a year - even though I use a CPA who specializes in small business.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Is this the way to run a productive economy?  I can guaranty Americans would have a far higher standard of living if we simplified this absurd system of guilty-until-proven-innocent taxation. But Calzada's report concludes that they often are temporary and have received $752,000 to $800,000 each in subsidies -- wind industry jobs cost even more, $1.4 million each. It seems like a huge violation of property rights to force business owners to deal with workers collectively (i.e., with socialistic force) rather than as &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-corrected"&gt;individuals&lt;/span&gt; (i.e., with individual liberty).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The US should be a meritocracy, not a land of entitlement. If unions behave and work to improve sales, then companies will want to deal with them. When the economy slows or shrinks, high-income taxpayers get little or no income from bonuses, commissions, and capital gains on stocks and real estate. Tax revenues sink accordingly. Almost no one cries for the rich, and I'm not saying we should, but a tax system based on soaking the rich leaves you high and dry during economic downturns.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It would be more equitable and stable if all California workers paid a similar percentage of income tax, with capital gains taxed at the same rate. In addition to providing a more stable tax base, it would be fairer to have voters share the burden of any tax increases or rewards of any tax cuts. You shouldn't be able to vote for a tax increase on others unless you're &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-corrected"&gt;willing&lt;/span&gt; to pay a proportional share yourself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A proportional (i.e., "flat") tax is a reasonable compromise between what is fair and what is practical. However, a person's "fair share" would ideally be based on an average individual's burden / impact to society. There would be a head tax (i.e., per person), plus some taxation based on how much impact you have on roads, schools, public safety, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's what I'd call a "fair share" of the tax burden, although I make no claim such a tax system is practical. Poor people are unable to pay their "fair share." The limited government part seems pretty mainstream, if presented properly. Not so with social conservatism, which is controversial and divisive. Big government Republicanism is pretty much mimicking Democrats with a different (e.g., “kinder, gentler”) set of moral values. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Another aspect of getting mainstream support is presenting limited government solutions to the problems of greatest interest, rather than running off into the weeds that no one cares about. While advocates of limited government might obsess on gun rights, drug decriminalization, etc, it’s better to focus on a small set of issues that are of greatest interest to mainstream voters. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Recent polls show those issues are (in order): the economy, the federal budget, health care, the wars, education, terrorism, and energy policy. Those are mainstream issues for which we have limited government solutions that should appeal to mainstream voters.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Recent polls show self-described “conservatives” are the biggest voting block, exceeding self-described “liberals” by a huge margin and self-described “moderates” by a small margin. Only 28% disagree, and 14% are not sure. &lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Middle class people are with us:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Middle-income voters are more likely to agree with Reagan than those who earn less than $20,000 or more than $100,000. &lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When looking for help from non-libertarians, we're much more likely to get support from conservatives than liberals, who basically love big government:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Political liberals strongly reject Reagan’s view by a 60% to 28% margin.  Forty-seven percent (47%) of moderates agree, while 32% do not. Conservatives are overwhelmingly supportive. &lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also interesting:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Although the Republican Party in Washington veered away from Reagan’s approach in the years since the 40th president left office, 83% of Republican voters around the country still agree with him. Campaigning in his coonskin cap, often by dogsled, Kefauver made history when, in an electrifying victory in the New Hampshire primary, he defeated President Harry S. Truman, the sitting President of the United States. Although Kefauver would go on to win twelve of the fifteen primaries that were held that year, losing three to "favorite son" candidates, primaries were not, at that time, the main method of delegate selection for the national convention. Kefauver, therefore, entered the convention a few hundred votes shy of the needed majority. In the 1952 Democratic Party presidential primaries, Kefauver received 3.1 million votes, while the eventual 1952 Democratic presidential nominee, Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson, received only 78,000 votes. &lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A political party is a private sector entity. The party membership should be able to nominate their candidate in whatever manner they choose. It looks like that's just another freedom the "progressives" have stolen from me. Roosevelt saved America from the Depression.&amp;#160; The Depression would not have been so &amp;quot;Great&amp;quot; if not for bad policies from FDR and Herbert Hoover before him.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;h3&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/23/business/23view.html"&gt;The New Deal Didn&amp;#8217;t Always Work, Either&lt;/a&gt; &lt;/h3&gt;  &lt;p&gt;By TYLER COWEN&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;MANY people are looking back to the Great Depression and the New Deal for answers to our problems. But while we can learn important lessons from this period, they&amp;#8217;re not always the ones taught in school. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The traditional story is that President Franklin D. Roosevelt rescued capitalism by resorting to extensive government intervention; the truth is that Roosevelt changed course from year to year, trying a mix of policies, some good and some bad.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;lt;snip&amp;gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;In short, expansionary monetary policy and wartime orders from Europe, not the well-known policies of the New Deal, did the most to make the American economy climb out of the Depression. More importantly, treating them as indistinguishable throws away our differentiation against the voter's other available choices (Green and &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;CP&lt;/span&gt;). We are the only party that has evolved beyond the obsolete left-vs.-right dichotomy, and are the only party that wants to legislate neither personal morality nor economic equality. When we suggest that the primary difference between the LP and the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"&gt;Ds&lt;/span&gt;/Rs is that they're in power and we're not, we suggest that 1) we would probably be corrupted by power too and 2) any non-incumbent party is as good as any other.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will always believe that our marketing should be built around the Nolan Chart. Does anyone know whether the Greens or &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6"&gt;CP&lt;/span&gt; ever try use the Nolan Chart and claim that they occupy the moral high ground on it? I'd be very surprised if they did.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No Brian, I doubt the Greens or others would like the results they'd get with the Nolan Chart. I caught only a small segment where Wayne described studying the same major as &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;Barack&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Obama&lt;/span&gt; at Columbia University in the class of 1983.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During class one day in 1981, someone ran into the auditorium and shouted, "President Reagan has been shot. They &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;assassinated&lt;/span&gt; him. He's dead." Immediately, the "entire class" of 300 or so students stood up and celebrated. They were high-&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;fiving&lt;/span&gt; and shouting with joy. At that point, they incorrectly believed the patriotic anti-communist American president was dead, and they were very happy about that. Wayne was horrified.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wayne then noted that many of his Columbia University classmates now dominate the news media and other influential establishments in our society. I'm guessing the problem is at least partly in delivery.  Most LP members have apparently never heard of Emily Post.  Then there are non-focused statements that meander off into libertarain obsessions regarding the evils of the state.  But back to the campaigning:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;IMHO, the top five issues that libertarians should communicate better to non-libertarians should closely align with public opinion polls.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;LP candidates should describe to non-libertarians the issues that concern mainstream voters, and tell them how libertarian policies help them.  And I use the word "them" intentionally. Most voters are greedy selfish bastards, so they want to know what's in it for them.  Even voters willing to cut programs are not willing to cut their own handouts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to polls like &lt;a href="http://www.pollingreport.com/prioriti.htm"&gt;this&lt;/a&gt;, voter priorities are the economy, Iraq war, healthcare, immigration, and terrorism.  They don't want to hear about libertarian obsessions with guns, drugs, 9/11 conspiracies, and the military-industrial complex.  Candidates should communicate voter issues, not libertarian ones. Sounds good. However, William F. Buckley and others on the right think another course of action might be better. Stay in the UN, but don't vote -- except to veto the really bad stuff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Willaim Rusher &lt;a href="http://www.townhall.com/columnists/WilliamRusher/2006/09/27/must_we_put_up_with_the_united_nations"&gt;writes&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;What to do? Pulling out of the United Nations would not eliminate it. It would keep on doing its best to body-block the United States, and hostility to this country would not only continue but increase, dramatically highlighted by our solitary absence from the organization. But staying in and doing nothing is scarcely better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ideally, the best course would probably be to encourage the founding and growth of a new group of the world's truly democratic nations, dedicated to addressing the world's problems with their wealth and wisdom, and gradually diminish the United Nations's pretensions. But such undeniably democratic nations as France and Germany would undoubtedly refuse to go along with such a scheme, preferring to pursue their current strategy in the United Nations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the circumstances, therefore, the best course may be the one proposed by the late James Burnham: for the United States to announce that it will continue supporting the beneficial activities of the United Nations in such matters as world health, but henceforth will not participate in, or vote on, its deliberations involving major political issues. (We would retain, however, our veto power, to block seriously offensive actions.) I quickly came up with the following examples:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- German Nazism&lt;br /&gt;- Japanese imperialism&lt;br /&gt;- Italian fascism&lt;br /&gt;- North Korean communism&lt;br /&gt;- Soviet communism&lt;br /&gt;- Afghan Taliban&lt;br /&gt;- Saddam's Baathism&lt;br /&gt;- British colonialism&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All these were eliminated partly or totally through US intervention, aggression, and the military’s superior ability to kill people and break things.  The US intervened, and its military used massive force and aggression to achieve those victories.  People bled profusely and many died.  In each case, greater liberty was the result.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think many left wingers, libertarians, and others live in a dream world – a kind of Shangri-La – where they fantasize that all is free and peaceful until some bully American president screws things up by intervening and ordering the US military into action.  Well, that’s not the way the world works.  Indeed, even at an individual level, people would rob you blind and hurt you severely without the police or some other collective aggressive security force.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The world mostly sucks as far as liberty is concerned.  Other than the Western nations, most of the world is run by thoroughly corrupt and often unelected thugs who care not about individual rights of any kind.  Fortunately, freedom is on the rise, largely due to American intervention and aggression.  That these are forceful acts of intevention tells us nothing about the purpose for which they’re used.  You can kill someone to secure liberty or to take it away.  You must always be willing to fight for freedom, or you will soon lose it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the real world, blood must often be shed to obtain and preserve liberty.  Even the overly-admired Swiss selfishly keep their own little piece of freedom by arming all able-bodied males in a system of compulsory military service. I read the &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benazir_Bhutto"&gt;Wikipedia entry on her&lt;/a&gt; and the &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benazir_Bhutto#Charges_of_corruption"&gt;charges against her&lt;/a&gt;, and it sounds like she and her husband were fabulously corrupt.  We're talking in excess of $1 billion in criminal activities.  Charges come from reputable Western nations, not just her political opponents in Pakistan.  Also, she is aligned with the international socialist movement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I were a Pakistani given the choice of voting for Bhutto, Musharraf, or Sharif, I think I'd slit my wrist. The US Postal Service cashed my check, but the stamps were lost in the mail. I'm out $41.00.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE: The Christmas card my mother mailed my son, postmarked December 8, just arrived yesterday, December 31.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE: An online retailer shipped a package to me on Dec 18 via the US Post Office. It had not yet arrived as of Jan 3. I used the tracking number to look at the shipping status. I found out that the package sat in their L.A. "Sortation Center" for about a week after spending 11 days in their Dallas center. They claim it will be delivered on Jan 4 after more than 2-1/2 weeks in transit. I've found UPS and FedEx ground services take only 2 - 7 days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE: I am pleased to report that a friend of mine explained the problem with the late package: "&lt;em&gt;It's because Postal rates are too low&lt;/em&gt;."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE: On January 7, I received the following response to my lost stamps:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;em&gt;According to our information, We make every effort to ensure our orders are processed and received within 2-3 weeks. However, due to the rate increase as well as the release of some very popular stamps, orders are taking longer to process. You can expect to receive your order in 1-2 weeks. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE: On February 2, I went to the Post Office to ask about the missing stamps. I was told I need to go to a different Post Office.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE: The week of Feb 4-8, I made a few calls to the local PO mail order number, after which I got a message recorder where I was "allowed" to leave a message with my complaint. Hearing nothing, I left another message on another day. No reply. No stamps yet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UPDATE: On Feb 12, Monica at the PO called me to say she found out the problem. They were looking for "Bob" Giramma rather than "Robert" Giramma. Good thing my last name is not Smith or Jones. Having finally determined that some people named Robert are nicknamed Bob (and totally ignoring that the family name "Giramma" is extremely rare), they could look up the sale information. They claim to have sent me the stamps on Dec 12. They will send a replacement order by certified mail soon. Can I tell the IRS my taxes are late because the Post Office hasn't been able to sell me stamps? Personally, I believe Romney would be the better of the two, when measured from my libertarian-right perspective.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Romney is exceptionally brilliant, while Giuliani is merely very smart.  Romney has an impressive private sector resume, while Giuliani has spent most of his career in government and the (non-productive) legal sector.  Both men will advocate far more government than I'd like, but Romney is more likely to favor mandates that involve private sector competition.  Romney ran a diverse state; Giuliani ran a specific city.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So in the categories of competence and free market experience, Mitt Romney is my preferred candidate over Rudy Giuliani. It is simply a myth to believe that only interventionism yields unintended consequence, since doing nothing at all may produce the same unexpected results. One at a time:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Taliban and al Qaeda lost their base of operations within a few months, and they've not gained it back. Afghanistan, however, is yet another dysfunctional country run by culturally backward Muslims. If the US and NATO leave, the Taliban and al Qaeda will be back. So we're stuck there, for the time being. You can call that victory or failure, but that's the way it is. If you really want to defeat them, you need to invade northwestern Pakistan and accept the subsequently likely bloodbath.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While the initial military invasion of Iraq was very successful in overthrowing the Baathist regime, President Bush commanded the occupation badly. Of course, anyone can say that with 20/20 hindsight. But Iraq now has the potential of turning into a success for the US, however unintentional the path may be. Al Qaeda chose to make a stand there, and they are close to defeat. The Islamic world, much of which used to sympathize with al Qaeda, has mostly turned against them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You cannot have liberty when individuals and groups are killing people worldwide in the name of religious tyranny. To defeat such savage obstacles to liberty, we must kill as they do. The difference is in the purpose, and the purpose of freedom is worth lots of blood -- preferably theirs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace-- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I bet he's taken in more money, and gotten Libertarian Party (LP) members to work more hours, than the entire party gets in a typical [year, decade, eternity?]. He gets some of his strongest support from the anarcho-libertarians, even though several important Ron Paul policies are incompatible with their beliefs. Party members need to think about this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Surely Dr Paul gets lots of publicity by being in the GOP, which puts him on TV in political debates that seem to occur almost every week. But most LP members don't care much about that venue or party. The official party candidates are getting almost zero attention, which is normal on the mainstream national level but not necessarily among party members.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is it? Can the Ron Paul phenomenon be leveraged by the LP now or in the future?
